Figures released by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) have revealed that almost half of the construction sites it visited as part of a survey on safety have failed basic standards in their spot checks.
Throughout September, the HSE carried out ‘surprise’ unannounced spot checks on more than 2,500 construction sites across the UK, with the aim of identifying risks to workers and prevent safety hazards and potential deaths. However, over 1,000 of these sites failed the basic safety checks due to inadequate safety in things like construction, demolition and working at height.
Heather Bryant, the HSE’s chief inspector of construction, told online magazine The Construction Index:
“It is disappointing to find a significant number of sites falling below acceptable health and safety standards, where our inspectors encountered poor practice this often went hand in hand with a lack of understanding.”
Numerous Sites Handed Enforcement Notices After Failures
“Through initiatives like this we are able to tackle underlying issues before they become established and we will continue to work with the industry in an effort to drive up standards. However those who recklessly endanger the health and lives of their workforce can expect to face tough consequences.”
Upon releasing the figures, the HSE announced that it had served a number of enforcement notices, as well as over 950 notifications for improvement or prohibitions – many of the sites surveyed also risk prosecution if standards aren’t raised.
